Frequently Asked Questions
What is an Optometrist? Do I need to see an Ophthalmologist?
An Optometrist is a doctor that specializes in examining, diagnosing, managing, and treating disorders and diseases of the eye and its associated structures. Optometrists conduct eye exams, correct vision, and prescribe medications that allow patients to see clearer than ever before. Optometrists also educate the patient about their own vision, and walk them through the process of proper eye care.
Ophthalmologists, in turn, perform surgery on the eye to help a patients vision. For example, a patient with severe cataracts can see an ophthalmologist to remove a clouded lens. After a procedure, patients regularly visit optometrists for post-operative care.
I already have glasses, do I really need to see an eye doctor?
Seeing your eye doctor periodically is always a good idea, as your prescription is always slowly changing. Coming in for an eye exam also helps us identify and catch and problems that may be creeping up on you. We recommend that patients above the age of 18 receive an eye exam every 2 years, or when there are noticeable changes or symptoms in your vision.
How long will my eye exam take?
While every eye exam caters to the specific needs for the patient coming in, the average eye exam can usually be completed in around 30 minutes. It consists of a refraction, consultation, and retinal imaging with Dr. Jason Eugenides.
